Our Reception children have been busy learning all about growth cycles and the natural world as part of their exciting topic work this term.

The children have explored how plants, insects and seasons change over time through a range of hands-on activities and creative learning experiences. They began by learning about plant life cycles, creating their own diagrams and writing about the different stages of growth from seed to flower.

As part of their investigations, the children examined seeds found inside different fruits and vegetables and discussed how plants grow. They also created lists and wrote instructions explaining how to plant seeds before having the opportunity to plant and grow their very own sunflowers. The children have loved caring for their plants and watching them change and grow each week.

Reception pupils have also explored seasonal changes, observing the transition from winter to spring and summer. During outdoor learning sessions, they collected natural materials and created beautiful leaf, flower and bark rubbings inspired by the world around them.

Another highlight of the topic was learning about the life cycles of butterflies and moths. The children carefully looked after caterpillars in the classroom and were fascinated to watch them transform into butterflies before being released outdoors. To record their learning, pupils created caterpillar-to-butterfly observation diaries and practised their drawing skills by sketching caterpillars and other minibeasts.

The topic has also inspired lots of creativity, with children producing colourful flower crafts and artwork linked to nature and growth.

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, curiosity and care shown by the Reception children throughout their learning. It has been wonderful to see them developing their scientific understanding while enjoying the beauty of the natural world.
